Forsythia

One spring, when I was in high school, a friend taught me the Korean word for forsythia. I didn't know what it was called in English, so I couldn't tell her, and for quite a while after that, I only knew the Korean word for it.

I don't remember when I learned the word "forsythia," or when the Korean word or my friend's name fell from my memory. But every spring, I see the yellow blossoms and I think of her.

  1. A favorite in the spring. When I was little, it was 'forCynthia', which was confusing.

  2. One year, my mom asked me to prune the forsythia bush out back. Being 14, I'd never pruned a single thing in my entire life. I cut and cut and cut and cut, and thought I'd done a pretty good job taming the hideous bush (prior to blossom).

My mom thought I'd butchered the plant on purpose. Lost her mind. Honestly, it was as though I'd killed a small dog. xox lis

  3. This is such a nice post. Well put the way these memory triggers work, parts of our ongoing lives stand in and remind us of people from our past. I'll have to thin kof which things make me think of you...
I'm excited to see these new posts, both of you. Perhaps more will come...
